To inculcate a historic mind and to inspire the younger generation to keep alive the memories and the traditions of our past
History of the Department
The year 1979 is a landmark in the history of St.Marys College as it was upgraded once again to a First Grade College after a span of twelve years with the introduction of BA History due to the tireless efforts of the then principal, Sr. Lima. The Department was formally inaugurated by Dr.M.A Ommen, Director, John Mathai Centre, University of Calicut. The first batch was initiated with 40 students under the guidance of Mrs.Sarama Thomas, the Head of the Department. Sr.Philo, Smt.Catherine Gemma, Smt.Vilasini Thathammat and Smt.Lovely E.J. was the other faculty members at the time. Later Smt. Philomina P.C, Smt.Nirmala, Smt Celine P.C, Smt.Gayathri Devi, Smt.Lissy C.J, Smt.Vasantha Nair R and Sr.Alphonsa C.P joined the department as Faculty members. The first batch of students appeared for the final examination in 1982 and came out with flying colours securing Second and Third ranks in the university. The pass percentage of the first batch was 75 %. Considering the excellent performance of the staff and students the management decided to introduce P.G programme in History as a self-financing. M.A History was formally inaugurated by Dr.Sathyamoorthy, Director, Archeological Survey of India, Kerala on 24 th November 1998. The first PG batch came in to being with 10 students under the headship of Smt.Catherine Gemma. The upgradation helped the department to retain our best Degree students in the same institution. Our college is the first college for women to have the Post Graduate course in History, at the University of Calicut. The P.G programme was regularized in 2010.
In the last five years, seven new permanent faculties were appointed. Throughout the history of the department, the students have maintained their academic and non-academic excellence by securing ranks and prizes. A notable achievement of the department is the First rank received by Jibi Jose, a visually challenged student in 2011. The Department has initiated many innovative techniques of learning like historical drama, lecture series, open seminars, open forums, debates, discussions and site visits. The department is also highly committed to the progress of the society and organizes exhibitions and plays focusing on the burning issues in the contemporary era.
History Museum
In 2003 the Department set up a History Museum under the auspices of the Principal, Sr.Philo James. It was set up with the objective of preserve antiques, artifacts and from the bygone eras. Museum takes student scholars on a journey through the living spaces of the past. The Department has continued the tradition of collections of antiques from the students and the beneficiaries. The museum is well maintained with regular collection and preservation of antiques and artifacts. In 2015 the museum was renovated and a corridor museum was set up with a rich collection of artefacts.
